Seven New BlackBerry Smartphones Expected in Coming Months

Research in Motion (RIM) announced plans to release seven new BlackBerry smartphones by the end of the year during its annual shareholders meeting a few days ago. RIM also acknowledged that its first tablet, the BlackBerry PlayBook, did not sell well due to the fact that the PlayBook was their first "retail" product and hence, lacked the support of major carriers.

According to IntoMobile, co-CEO Jim Balsillie stated that there would be several devices "within rapid succession" in the next month. This will only mean that the BlackBerry Bold 9900 will go on sale soon and we expect to see more product launches in the coming months. Plans to introduce a 4G version of the BlackBerry PlayBook sometime in fall was unveiled as well although RIM is in no rush to introduce it as 4G networks are not readily available in most countries at the moment.

With the numbers from the recent comScore's survey on the U.S smartphone market showing a bleak outlook for RIM, we do not know if this is enough to stem its market share loss to the competition. This is an important transition period for RIM as it gradually shifts its entire line of BlackBerry devices towards adopting the QNX operating system (OS). We have seen what the new QNX OS can do and its potential in the BlackBerry PlayBook. If RIM can survive this transition period, QNX OS may be RIM's greatest hope in reclaiming lost ground.
