Seagate announces new storage devices with Seagate Personal Cloud, Seagate Wireless and Seagate Seven
Seagate has announced the immediate availability of three brand new brand new products that cater to a variety of storage needs, from reliable cloud storage and backup to wireless streaming and traditional storage solutions. The trio are:- Seagate Personal Cloud, Seagate Wireless and Seagate Seven storage devices.
Seagate Personal Cloud
Seagate’s Personal Cloud is a network-attached storage (NAS) device targeted at home users who need to backup their computers, have access to files from wherever they are, and share large files with friends and family. Seagate has released two drives under the Personal Cloud brand, Seagate Personal Cloud and Seagate Personal Cloud 2-Bay, both of which can stream content to connected devices such as smartphones, set-top boxes, tablets, PCs and televisions via the Seagate Media application. The drives can also be used in conjunction with the Seagate Mobile Backup app and Dashboard software, which allow them to act as a central backup device for desktop and mobile devices.
As suggested by its name, the Seagate Personal Cloud 2-Bay has two internal drives that provide more serious users with an additional backup of vital data. The drive ships with factory configurations that automatically duplicate all content stored on one drive to the secondary drive as a second line of defense against drive failure. The Personal Cloud 2-Bay also gives users the flexibility of configuring the drive into a single volume of storage should they need more space.
These new NAS devices immediately replace the older Seagate Central cloud storage device and are available in the following capacity points and price points:-
- Seagate Personal Cloud:- 3TB (S$299), 4TB (S$399) and 5TB ($459)
- Seagate Personal Cloud 2-Bay:- 4TB (S$499), 6TB (S$699) and 8TB (S$899) (combined drive capacity)
Seagate Wireless
Seagate Wireless is a 500GB portable wireless drive designed for streaming and offloading media from mobile devices. It is meant to complement the limited storage capacities of these devices and provide users with additional and convenient storage on-the-go.
The drive is accessed through the Seagate Media app which is available for iOS, Android, Kindle Fire HD and Windows 8 devices. The drive is capable of creating its own Wi-Fi signal, which means users do not even need to have an existing network connection in order to access their stored media.
Although it has only one capacity size, the Seagate Wireless is available in few color options:- green, blue, red, white and black. It is currently available at a Suggested Retail Price (SRP) of S$199. If you require more capacity (up to 2TB), you can still opt to purchase the older Seagate Wireless Plus drive with its more conventional form and design.
Seagate Seven
The 7mm-thick Seagate Seven drive comes in an ultra-slim form factor that manages to evoke design sentiments of both 2.5-inch internal hard drives and a glimpse of the future. While it only packs 500GB of storage, which is quite low for a traditional external storage drive, the Seagate Seven appears to pay tribute to the essence of bare hard drives and Seagate’s roots as a traditional storage provider.
The Seagate Seven is the world’s thinnest external hard drive, and its all-steel enclosure and advanced design are a calculated demonstration of Seagate’s carefully-researched drive technologies and manufacturing. While it beats the traditionally designed 9.6mm thin Seagate Backup Plus Slim 500GB portable drive, the Seven is in fact a tad wider and lengthier, perhaps a necessary aspect to accommodate for the Seven's design elements. After all, the thin steel enclosure does also add 28g more weight to the drive as opposed to the regular Seagate Backup Plus Slim option.
In any case, the choice is clear for either drives since the new Seven is first and foremost design oriented, while the Backup Plus Slim accommodates larger storage needs in a decent package. The Seagate Seven is currently retailing at an SRP of S$199.
