Featuring the latest GCN architecture from AMD with 2816 stream processing units and an enhanced engine clock of up to 1040MHz, the R9 290X Tri-X comes equipped with 4GB of GDDR5 memory on a 512-bit interface and is clocked at 5200MHz, deliverin higher bandwidth than the reference model.

Both graphics cards are based on reference design PCBs with custom cooling developed by Sapphire. First introduced on the R9 280X Toxic edition, the Tri-X cooler uses three fans with dust repelling bearings and aerofoil section blades to deliver optimal airflow at low noise levels, with the fan cowling designed to ensure that the airflow is routed across the hottest areas of the card. Sapphire has also tailored the fan speed profiles to a transitional linear mode.

With support for Ultra HD (4K displays) and AMD Eyefinity multi-screen technology, the Sapphire R9 290 series maximizes the visual experience for work or play with superior image quality and high resolution displays. Integrated with AMD TrueAudio technology, a dedicated audio processor in the GPU enables the series to produce a richer and immersive soundscape.

Dual BIOS ensure that the cards boot and provide maximum performance in systems with both UEFI and legacy BIOS implementations. Certain Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 and Tri-X R9 290X packaged models comes bundled with a free copy of BF4.
