SanDisk unveils new 200GB microSD card

That 200GB is not a typo.

Almost a year ago, we reported that SanDisk's bringing out a 128GB microSD card. Here we are again, nearly a year later, with yet another SanDisk announcement and it's also about another microSD card, though this time's the capacity's a record breaking 200GB. SanDisk's calling it the SanDisk Ultra microSDX UHS-I Card.

That may not seem a lot if you're viewing it from a normal storage perspective, but for microSD cards, 200GB is a whopping 56% increase over SanDisk's previous 128GB cards. It's also a telling number that we might not be seeing anymore substantial increases in the future. Capacity upgrades usually happen in multiples of two (2, 4, 8 and so on), thus 256GB is logically the next tier from 128GB. That's obviously not the case here.

With SanDisk choosing to release a 200GB version instead of 256GB one, it's not unreasonable to assume that space constraints are limiting how much more storage can be compressed into the microSD size. While we might be seeing a 256GB microSD card in the future, the chances of  a 1TB (or even 512GB) microSD card coming out are looking mighty slim at this point.

Like the 128GB card we reported on last year, the 200GB version will also be compatible with the Memory Zone app, as well as all of its features, like OptiMem.

The 200GB microSD card will have transfer speeds of up 90MB/s. The record breaking card won't come cheap though as it's currently pegged to retail for US$399.99 when it hits stores in Q2 2015.
