SanDisk launches new 256GB microSD cards at MWC Shanghai 2016

At MWC Shanghai 2016, SanDisk launched their latest 256GB microSD cards. They are the new 256GB SanDisk Extreme microSDXC UHS-I card, and the 256GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card, Premium Edition. These new cards are a step up from the 200GB cards launched in March 2015.

The new SanDisk Extreme microSD card boasted a transfer speed of up to 100MB/s, and write speeds of up to 90MB/s. By SanDisk's estimate, a user can record up to 14 hours of 4K, UHD videos on the 256GB cards. This card is targeted at users who shoot high-quality footage with action cameras and high-performance drones.

On the other hand, the SanDisk Ultra microSD card features a transfer speed of up to 95MB/s. SanDisk said that this write speed can let users move up to 1,200 photos in a minute. According to SanDisk, the 256GB SandDisk ultra microSD is suitable for the typical Android smartphone user who wants great capacity with evolving storage needs.

Both the SanDisk Extreme and SanDisk Ultra microSD cards have bus modes rated at UHS-I, and this allows the cards to handle 4K resolution recording smoothly. The new SanDisk Extreme has UHS Speed Class 3, while the new SanDisk Ultra comes at a lower Speed Class 10 (you can read more about the differences here).

The cards themselves are waterproof up to IPx7 rating (72 hours in 1m of salt or fresh water), temperature proof between -25°C to 85°C, immune to airport X-Rays, shockproof up to 500Gs, capable of withstanding up to 5,000 Gauss of static magnetic fields, and finally able to withstand drops from 5 meters.

Users can manage the contents on the microSD cards via the SanDisk Memory Zone app for Android, which can be found on the Google Play app store.

Local pricing is not yet available, but SanDisk released the global pricing and availability dates of the new cards, listed below:

  • 256GB SanDisk Extreme microSDXC UHS-I card: US$199, Q4 2016
  • 256GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card, Premium Edition: US$149, August 2016
