Samsung's gorgeous QLED 4K TVs are now in stores

First announced at CES at the start of the year and then subsequently showed off at a local press event, Samsung has today announced the pricing and availability of its QLED TVs. Samsung’s flagship 4K UHD TVs for 2017, they're divided into three series: the flatscreen Q7F and Q9F, and the curved Q8C.

I’ve covered these new quantum-dot-driven 4K UHD TVs in depth here, but for the benefit of those who’re reading this for the first time, here’s a quick recap of the QLED TVs' key features:

  • DCI-P3, 100% color volume - According to Samsung, the QLED TVs not only cover the DCI-P3 color space, they can also reproduce these colors regardless of brightness level. Viewing angles are said to be improved as well compared to last year’s SUHD models.

  • Ultra HD Premium-certified - Like last year’s SUHD TVs, the new QLED TVs have been certified by the UHD Alliance. Samsung claims a peak luminance of between 1,500 and 2,000 nits, which means these QLED TVs are ideal for both daytime and nighttime viewing, as well as playback of HDR (high dynamic range) content. The QLED TVs support the open HDR10 format, but not Dolby Vision.

  • Improved One Remote - Expectedly, the QLED TVs are the smartest TVs Samsung has built to date. With the One Remote, users can control devices from a single TV remote controller. Voice control is supported, too.

The silver One Remote that comes with the 2017 QLED TVs.

  • Improved Smart View app - The TVs’ Smart Hub interface has been extended to smartphones through Samsung’s latest Smart View app. Users can see all available smart TV content on the screen of compatible mobile devices; and with the improved interface, they can use these mobile devices to select and start their favorite live TV programs and video-on-demand services.

Now you don't need to put down your phone to pick up the remote just to select new stuff to watch.

  • Invisible Cable - To solve the problem of cable clutter, the QLED TVs come with a single, transparent “Invisible Cable” that runs to the One Connect box, through which all the external devices can be gathered and connected to. Here's a GIF to illustrate.

The Invisible Connection cables are really quite thin and discreet.

  • No-Gap Wall-Mount - The QLED TVs continue to use Samsung’s “360° Boundless” design language, and feature a uniformly thin body and a nearly bezel-less frame. And the new optional “No-Gap Wall-Mount” allows the mounted TV to sit flush against the wall.

The end result (right) is a TV that can go flush against the wall when it's mounted.

  • New stands - Customers who don’t like to wall-mount their TVs have two beautifully-crafted stands that they can buy: the “Studio Stand” resembles an easel with a painting; and the “Gravity Stand”, which when attached to the TV, resembles a contemporary sculpture.

Whichever stand you choose, the back of the TV will look pretty. That said, I think the Q9 looks best when wall-mounted.

New Premium UHD TV lineup and Sound+ soundbar

Samsung has also announced a premium 4K TV lineup with slightly more wallet-friendly prices. Both the MU8000 (curved) and MU7000 (flat) are Tizen-based smart TVs that work with the One Connect external box and One Remote controller, and support HDR10. They also feature Samsung’s “Clean Cable Solution”, which basically route cords through the base of the TV stand.

The new MS6501 Sound+ soundbar has also arrived in stores. This is Samsung’s first soundbar that has a subwoofer embedded right into the primary unit. There’s an optional mounting bracket you can get to seamlessly attach the soundbar onto the TV; and to reduce overall clutter, both soundbar and TV can be powered by a single power source.

The MU7000 and 8000 series of premium 4K TVs have a peak brightness of 1,000 nits and use a smaller One Connect box.

The silver MS6501 curved soundbar can be easily mounted to the wall as well.
