Samsung Introduces TecTiles NFC Stickers (Update)

Update: The local Samsung representative has commented that Samsung is exploring the possibility of introducing TecTiles in Singapore but nothing has been confirmed for now.

NFC technology in mobile phones is rapidly picking up; however, the same cannot be said for its user adoption rate. In such situations, manufacturers often look for ways to pave usage of the technology on a consumer level, like what Sony and LG have done by introducing NFC tags/stickers, SmartTags and Tag Plus respectively. Well, it's Samsung's turn to join the fray - Samsung US has announced the availability of TecTiles, small square stickers that allow you to perform tasks such as launching apps, making phone calls, opening web pages and more by simply tapping it with an NFC-enabled smartphone.

TecTiles are compatible with the following Samsung smartphones: Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Nexus, and Nexus S. Simply download the Samsung TecTiles app off Google Play, and you can program the TecTiles to do:

  • Change phone settings, including Bluetooth, WiFi, ringer volume, brightness, etc.
  • Launch an app
  • Join a WiFi network
  • Show a message
  • Make a call or start a Google Talk conversation
  • Send a predetermined text message, like “I’m on my way” on a steering wheel TecTile
  • Share a contact or business card
  • Open up to a certain address on a map
  • Open a web page
  • Check in on foursquare or Facebook
  • Automatically “Like” something on Facebook
  • Update your Facebook status
  • Post a tweet or automatically follow on Twitter
  • Connect with someone on LinkedIn

TecTiles are available for $14.99 in packs of five from Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile in the US; we are still checking with local representatives for its availability here.
