Samsung puts quantum dot technology into its new curvy gaming monitors
Samsung has announced three new gaming monitors at IFA 2016, all of which feature curved displays and quantum dot technology traditionally found in TVs.
The CFG70 monitor is available in 24-inch and 27-inch models, while the larger CF791 has just a single 34-inch variant. The reason this is interesting – and not just another routine gaming monitor announcement – is because quantum dots have been thought to offer similar benefits to the much vaunted OLED technology.
Quantum dots are actually nano particles that emit different colored light depending on their size. But even though existing implementations of the technology still use a more traditional LED backlight, Samsung says they are capable of reproducing more vibrant and crisp colors. This also means things like deeper blacks and a better ability to distinguish between subtler color tones.
All three monitors are curved, which Samsung says combine with the better image quality to create a more immersive experience. The CFG70 monitors have a 1,800R curvature, while the 34-inch CF791 has a subtler 1,500R one.
That said, both 24- and 27-inch CFG70 monitors have the same 1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, and 1ms response time. Those specifications will clearly appeal to gamers seeking high refresh rates and low latencies, although the middling resolution may appear a bit underwhelming, especially on the 27-inch model.
On the other hand, the CF791 has a higher 3,440 x 1,440-pixel resolution and a 100Hz refresh rate and 4ms response time. Unlike the CFG70 displays, it also comes with a pair of built-in 7 watt speakers and two USB ports at the back.
The stands on both monitors are also rather unique, reminding us rather of lamp stands. The CFG70 monitors support tilt, swivel, and pivot motions, but the larger CF791 is a little more restricted in its movement and you can only adjust the height and tilt angle.
All three displays support AMD’s FreeSync variable refresh rate technology for less stuttering and tearing and an overall smoother gaming experience.
The 24-inch CFG70 will sell for US$399, while the 27-inch model is more expensive at US$499. The CF791 will cost US$999. Samsung plans to release the monitors in the fourth quarter of this year.
