Samsung has been hard at work developing its first foldable smartphone (also known as the Galaxy X) since 2015 and it is possible that we could get a glimpse of it later this year.

According to Korean publication ETNews, Samsung is currently at the final stages of development for the Galaxy X and production could begin in the third quarter of the year. However, mass production is said to only begin next year.

The rumored goal of releasing a prototype in the third quarter of this year could mean that Samsung may showcase it at IFA 2017. In addition, Samsung is said to racing against Chinese phone makers to release the world's first foldable smartphone.

Earlier this year, Business Korea learnt from its industry sources that the Galaxy X may be revealed this year with a market release in the first half of 2018. However, the Korean Herald claimed that Samsung would roll out more than 100,000 units this year.

Samsung is also reportedly developing two different foldable phones with one of them being released earlier to test the market reaction. The foldable smartphone could actually be a phone and tablet hybrid as depicted in a patent application. In addition, Samsung has submitted patents for foldable tablet and smartphone displays
