Samsung may bring the iris scanner to its mid-range smartphones

One of the key highlights of the Samsung Galaxy Note7 is the iris scanner which adds another layer of security on the device against unauthorized access. If you've seen the video above, you would know that the iris scanner unlocks very fast and appears to be as secure as the fingerprint scanner! Will this be an exclusive feature of Samsung's premium flagship phones? No.

According to SamMobile, DJ Koh, President of Samsung’s Mobile Division revealed that he is hoping to bring the iris scanning technology to the mid-range lineup once the costs are more controllable. As such, you would expect at least a year or two before this is possible.

“Through continued cost cutting, iris scanning can trickle down to mid-end models,” he added. “There is a view that Android is weak in security compared to its competitor and we want to expand software security that can overcome this image,” said DJ Koh.

Besides unlocking the phone, the iris scanner gives you secure access to a Secure Folder where you can store personal files. It remains to be seen whether iris scanners on smartphones will take off as well as fingerprint sensors.
