Samsung launches flagship JS9500 and JS9000 SUHD curved smart TVs

Ultra high-definition 4K resolutions are the latest buzzwords now, and we’re used to seeing the label slapped on everything from TVs to projectors and camcorders. Today, Samsung is leading the charge with its announcement of its JS9500 and JS9000 flagship SUHD 4K TVs, which will feature Samsung’s proprietary nano-crystal technology for better color reproduction, brightness, contrast, and detail.

As we saw at Samsung’s pre-CES press conference earlier in the year, the new nano-crystal technology still uses LED backlighting, but now aided by quantum dot particles. In a nutshell, these fluorescent nanoparticles of semiconducting material transmit different colors of light depending on their size. The result is higher color purity, which effectively translates to more accurate colors, a wider color gamut, and better contrast levels.

The new SUHD TVs use Samsung's proprietary Nano Crystal Technology.

According to Samsung, its nano-crystal technology is free from cadmium, a potentially harmful and toxic substance. The layer of nano-crystals are also arranged uniformly for more consistent colors and feature protection against oxidation, which means colors won’t degrade over time.

In addition, the new SUHD smart TVs will have an intelligent SUHD re-mastering engine that optimizes content to enhance the color and brightness reproduction. It automatically analyzes the brightness of the image and diverts power from the darker pixels to the brighter ones. This ultimately helps to improve contrast levels, produce deeper blacks, and an elevated level of brightness over conventional UHD TVs.

The JS9500 and JS9000 also usher in Samsung’s move to Tizen OS to power its smart TV UI. The Tizen-based SUHD TVs represent Samsung’s efforts to make its smart TVs part of the IoT ecosystem by 2017. For instance, the Quick Connect feature allows the TVs to pair with selected Samsung smartphones via BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). Users can then share video content from their Samsung smartphones to their TVs and vice versa without needing to download any additional mobile apps. The TVs can even sync with users’ smartphones and render pop-up displays with information such as the weather and their schedule for the day.

The JS9000 and JS9500 will be able to mirror your Samsung smartphone's display on the screen.

Powering all this is an octa-core processor, which will help the TVs to handle multiple tasks seamlessly. The SUHDs come with a Smart Remote Control, which enables users to intuitively interact with the onscreen UI display and take control of the TVs.

In addition, the pricier JS9500 will feature a full-array LED backlight with an increased number of dimming blocks, which should make for better contrast levels and color accuracy over the edge-lit JS9000.

For users hoping to snap up some SUHD goodness, the following models are already available at all authorized Samsung dealers at these respective price points:

  • JS9000 (55-inch) - S$5,499
