Samsung to launch more Tizen-based smartphones this year?

Samsung has sold over a million Tizen-based Z1 phones in India.

Google and Samsung have always had a somewhat tenuous relationship and the latest rumor from a Reuters source may signal Samsung's desire for more independence and less reliance on Google's platform. After selling more than a million Z1 phones running on Samsung's partially in-house Linux-based OS, Tizen (primarily in India), the anonymous source told Reuters that "Samsung will launch several Tizen smartphones [later this year] at varying prices."

The benefits for Samsung to break away from Android are obvious - it can promote its own services and stand out in a market where almost everyone else is relying on Google software. Will the Samsung S7 be running on Tizen? Unlikely, but it's possible that once Samsung refines the OS at the low and mid-range end of the market, we could see it jump to its flagship devices. Tizen OS is already used on most of Samsung's smartwatches, including the Gear S, Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and Gear Fit.
