Samsung to Launch 4-inch Galaxy S III Mini on 11 October (Update)
*Update: The specs of the Samsung Galaxy S III have apparently been leaked. Besides a 4-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, the Galaxy S III Mini is alleged to be powered by a dual-core STE U8420 processor clocked at 1GHz, 1GB RAM and has a 5-megapixel rear camera.
Motivated by the growing demand for 4-inch smartphones in Europe, Samsung confirmed today that it will be releasing a 4-inch variant of the Galaxy S III in Germany on 11th October.
The announcement was made by JK Shin, the head of Samsung Mobile Communications during a meeting with Korean press today. Although Shin did not reveal much about the device, he mentioned that the 4-inch Galaxy S III will have "full form factor", indicating that the device is not an entry-level phone.
The Verge - "We'll be launching a 4-inch Galaxy S III on the 11th in Germany," Shin said. "There's a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe. Some call it an entry-level device, but we call it 'mini.'"
With most high-end Android models sporting minimum screen sizes of 4.5-inches, the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini is more likely to be positioned as a midrange phone. Its immediate competitor is the Apple iPhone 5, which also comes with a 4-inch display. It seems that the battleground between the two companies have shifted from the U.S to Europe.
