Besides dividing flagship models into "premium" and "sub-premium" categories, Samsung's revamped smartphone strategy next year includes increased focus on the budget lineup.

According to The Korea Times, an official at one of Samsung's local partners claims that Samsung plans to reduce smartphone shipments in 2016 by about 12% compared to 2015. This translates to about 420 million to 430 million handsets for next year, which will help the Korean company maintain its global share.

The Korea Times - "This is more about adjustments to changing market environment," said the official.

In addition, Samsung will be shifting its focus to budget smartphones as demand for these devices is rising in overseas markets. The Galaxy A and J series performed better than expected despite stiff competition in the budget and midrange markets.

Samsung recently unveiled a new lineup of Galaxy A series which consists of the Galaxy A9 (2016), the Galaxy A7 (2016), the Galaxy A5 (2016) and the Galaxy A3 (2016). These Galaxy A (2016) will initially be available in the Chinese market and may hit global markets soon after.
