Samsung Buys Streaming Entertainment Startup Boxee
Remember Boxee, the streaming media startup that initially started off as a cross-platform media center software company, but later on focused on its own hardware, such as the D-Link-made Boxee Box and the Boxee Cloud DVR? Well, the Israeli and NYC-based company has been acquired by Samsung, whom we presume will now go on to integrate Boxee’s software and technologies into its Smart TVs.
First reported by Israel site The Marker (Google Translate), the deal is now confirmed by the Korean CE giant. In a statement to The New York TImes, Samsung said that the company has acquired key talent and assets from Boxee, and the move will help Samsung improve the overall user experience across its connected devices. Boxee has also made its own announcement on its website.
While neither party revealed the exact amount of the deal, it’s widely reported to be around US$30 million.
