Samsung Announces Availability of New Quad-Core Exynos 5 Octa Processor
In the wake of the launch of its latest Galaxy S IV smartphone, Samsung also announced the availability of its new quad-core Exynos 5 Octa that powers the Galaxy S IV smartphone.
The new processor actually features two kinds of CPU; four Cortex-A15 CPUs and another four Cortex-A7 ones, in an ARM big.LITTLE architecture. The Cortex-A15 cores will handle processing-intense tasks, while the Cortex-A7 CPUs are meant for lighter workloads. According to Samsung, this allows for power savings up to 15 per cent, as compared to using only Cortex-A15 CPUs.
The other new features of the processor include e-MMC (embedded multimedia card) 5.0 and USB 3.0 interfaces for "...faster data transfer..." to storage expansion cards, an embedded video hardware codec engine for 1080p video recording and play-back, and an embedded 13-megapixel, 30 frames per second (fps) image signal processor interface for high-quality camera functionality.
