Samsung and Sony will update their 2015 4K UHD TVs to support HDR and HDMI 2.0a

In our article titled Buying a 4K TV: What you need to know about HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.0, HEVC & UHD, we noted that the latest HDMI version now stands at 2.0a, with high dynamic range (HDR) video support the major new feature added. In the article, we also mentioned that not many current 4K TVs come with HDMI 2.0a support out of the box, with select models from Samsung and Sony’s current lineup being the exceptions.

At this year's IFA, Samsung has confirmed that it will be issuing a firmware update for its 2015 SUHD and UHD TVs to add support for HDMI 2.0a. According to FlatpanelsHD, this came after Sony’s announcement that it too will deliver a software update to enable HDMI 2.0a for all its 2015 4K UHD TVs.

To be clear, there are a few ways to enjoy 4K HDR content on your TV. One is via streaming services such as those from Netflix and Amazon; the other is via UHD Blu-ray titles. Updating the TV’s HDMI ports to be HDMI 2.0a compatible means that it’s now possible for you to enjoy HDR content from such external players.

We'll keep posted again when the updates arrive.
