Sales of iPad Pro outstrip Surface tablets in its opening quarter

The iPad Pro is not for everyone. It might be powerful and great for multitasking, but it's also really big and pricey.

The latest Surface tablet, the Surface Pro 4, on the other hand, is better than ever and is a true alternative to your notebooks.

Both devices have their pros and cons, and both were launched just before the holiday season.

However, according to figures from IDC, the new iPad Pro has outsold the Surface Pro 4 in the past three months.

Jitesh Ubrani, Senior Research Analyst with IDC, said, "Despite lukewarm reviews, the iPad Pro was the clear winner this season as it was the top selling detachable, surpassing notable entries from Microsoft and other PC vendors."

Despite the positive performance of the iPad Pro, Apple continues to lose market share in the tablet space. It's market share now stands at 24.5%, down from a high of around 70% five years ago. If it's any consolation, Apple remains to be the world's top tablet brand.

Microsoft has yet to crack the top five, but its Surface tablets have been well received and continue to gain traction in this market.
