Rumor: AMD’s upcoming Zen server processor will be named Naples

AMD President and CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, at Computex 2016, with the first public demonstration of the new "Zen" core.

At Computex 2016, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su teased the crowd with her announcement of the 8-core, ‘Summit Ridge’ Zen desktop CPU. With support for multi-threading, the new x86 processor is based on the 14nm fabrication process, and promises to deliver 40% more IPC (instructions per clock), at lower TDPs levels, with lower power consumptions levels too.

Now, it appears that AMD has stepped up its game; to reiterate, there was a rumor in February this year about an upcoming 32-core, 64-thread configuration ‘Zen’ CPU. Now, there’s more affirmation as Fudzilla has reported about an enterprise-level, 32-core AMD ‘Zen’ processor, codenamed “Naples”. The “Naples” sports the abovementioned core count/thread configuration, and each ‘Zen’ CPU core has 512kB of cache. The x86 ‘Zen’ cores will be grouped in clusters, and each cluster will share an 8MB L3 cache. There appears to be eight such clusters, bringing the L3 cache to a total of 64MB. The new processor will use a SP3 LGA server socket.

The new chips will be manufactured on the 14nm fabrication process with FinFET transistor architecture by Globalfoundries. The ‘Naples’ CPU will feature up to eight independent memory channels, and support up to 128 PCIe Gen 3.0 bus lanes. In terms of memory support, Fudzilla reported ‘Naples’ will work with both SATA and NVMe flash-based drives. In terms of network connectivity, the Naples CPU is able to support up to 16x 10GbE network controllers, which are most likely to be integrated in the chipset. The Naples CPU is the high-end enterprise-level processor, and there will reportedly other SKUs offered, i.e., dual-, quad- and sixteen-core versions, with TDPs rated between 35- and 180W.
