RugGear, a manufacturer famous for its rugged smartphones, made headlines last year when it launched the world's toughest Android smartphones at CommunicAsia 2013. This year, the company strengthened its portfolio with two new smartphones, which are the Mariner Pro RG100 and iSafe Innovation 2.0.
RugGear Mariner Pro RG100
Designed to be a multi-purpose mobile phone, the RG100 has four key features that will appeal to sports enthusiasts. Besides its IP68 ratings for water and dust resistance, the shockproof phone comes with a LED torch light at the top. It can be used as a flashlight or as a blinking light on bicycles.
The RG100 also acts as a power bank, which allows you to charge other mobile devices with its built-in 2,400mAh battery. You also can stream music via Bluetooth from your daily smartphone (e.g. Apple iPhone) to the 3W loud speaker on the RG100. When we tried out the speaker at the booth, the audio output was really loud. In fact, it is the loudest we've heard from a smartphone!
What got us interested is its ability to make or receive calls even without a SIM card. To do so, you have to pair the RG100 with another phone. Over a Bluetooth connection, you are able to dial a contact or answer an incoming call on the RG100. We were told by a RugGear spokesperson that this feature would be a hit among cyclists as they tend to put their work phones in pouches/bags.
Other specs of the phone include a MediaTek MT6260A processor, 8MB RAM and an internal storage capacity of 8MB. It has a microSD memory card that supports cards up to 32GB. The RG100 has a 2-inch QCIF display (176 x 220 pixels) and a rear 1.3-megapixel camera. It measures 126 x 58 x 23mm and weighs 165g. If you are interested to buy the RG100, it is priced about S$200. Below is a short video showing its four main features:
