Rollkers electronic "under shoes" will let you walk up to 11km/h

This is the Rollkers prototype. They hope to release it to the market by the end of 2015.

At CES 2015, we saw lots of wearables, but most of them are just permutations of things that are already on the market, such as smart watches and activity trackers. Rollkers, however, is something a little more fresh and interesting.

Dubbed by its makers as the world's first electronic "under shoes", Rollkers is a device that can attach to any shoe and enable its wearer to walk at speeds of up to 11km/h, roughly the equivalent of a slow jog.

What's more impressive about the Rollkers, however, is that it has a controller that helps stabilizes and assists movements so that walking in it feel natural. This also means that unlike roller skates, the Rollkers' learning curve is kept short and even first-time users can quickly get on Rollkers and start walking.

Equally impressive is that the Rollkers is powered by an onboard lithium-ion battery that automatically recharges itself by converting kinetic energy from motion to electrical energy.

Unfortunately, the Rollkers is not available for sale yet as it is still in the prototyping phase. That said, the company expects to begin sales later this year for around US$400, and hopes to be able to bring costs down as volume picks up. The company is also looking to license its technology.
