Roccat's modular Nyth mouse is finally out

The Nyth won't come cheap. The extra buttons even come in their own case.

Exactly a year ago, we talked about the Nyth and Skelter. While the Skelter keyboard is still missing in action, the Nyth isn't. It's actually just been released by Roccat.

The most impressive spec is the 12,000 dpi sensor. To date, only one other mouse has a sensor that high; the Logitech Proteus Core.

From the specs, the Nyth is a beast of a mouse, with an extreme 12,000dpi sensor. That's as fast as Logitech's Proteus Core. Apart from the blazing fast sensor, the mouse also has modular keys so that you can customize the types of key and their number. For example, if you don't want to fill up the thumb zone with all 12 buttons, you can swap them out and only use how many you want. Roccat claims that you can have up to 18,369 different combinations with just the buttons it supplies.

The Roccat Nyth is a modular mouse, with a bevy of buttons that you can swap in and out. It's billed as a MMO mouse but you can obviously use it for other games. While the top of the mouse looks a bit like the Roccat Tyon, complete with the Dorsal Fin, the side of the mouse couldn't be more different.

The side of the Nyth is where you can plug in the buttons. Note that they come in different sizes too.

Roccat bundles the Nyth with 33 buttons. However, if you have a 3D printer, you can make your own custom buttons to use on the Roccat Nyth. Roccat recognizes not everybody's a designer though, which is why the company is setting up a 3D Library, which will allow users to download Roccat's 3D models and then print them out themselves. Sadly though, the library's not online yet.

The 3D Library isn't up and running yet unfortunately. All you get is the countdown when you visit it.

While having modular buttons would be enough for most mice, the Nyth goes one step further by having its sidegrips be customizable too. Similar to the buttons, the Roccat also provides different types of grips to suit the style of  different users. Also like the buttons, users can 3D print their own custom grips (or get them off the Roccat Library when it opens) if they don't want to use the provided ones for some reason.

You can change the sidegrips to better suit your mouse grip, though Roccat only supplies two different types with the Nyth. You can get more off from the 3D Library.

Of course, Roccat's unique Easy Shift [+] system returns on the Nyth. The Easy Shift [+] system lets you assign a secondary function to any of the mouse's buttons, doubling the number of usable buttons, without adding in extra ones. We love it on every Roccat product that we've tried, which probably means that we'll love it on the Nyth too.

With all the extra buttons and sidegrips the Nyth comes with, it'd be nearly impossible to keep track of them all without some sort of container, which is why the Nyth also comes with a separate carrying case for all of the extra unused buttons and whatnot.

Here's where you keep all the extra pieces when they're not in use with the Nyth.

Also, if you hated using the confusingly named Roccat Driver utility (like us), you'll be glad to know that the Nyth ditches that in favor of a new customization suite called the Swarm, which will be the new utility for all of Roccat's products from here on out.

With such a huge list of extra parts, the Roccat Nyth isn't exactly cheap. It'll go on sale locally for $229, though there's no release date yet. If you can't wait, Amazon has it on sale right now for US$119.
