Google is likely to take the wraps off the successor of the ASUS Nexus 7 at its annual I/O in May, but sources have indicated to Reuters that the device will only be launched in July.

According to Reuters, two sources claim that the next generation Nexus 7 will be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Due to concerns over power efficiency, Google has decided use Qualcomm chipsets. The device is also alleged to come with a higher resolution display with a thinner bezel, and will be manufactured by ASUS.

The sources added that Google is aiming to ship as many as 8 million of the devices in the second half of 2013 to fend off competition from Amazon Kindle Fires and Apple iPad mini. While pricing is yet to be confirmed, Google may consider two marketing strategies:

  • Sell the new generation Nexus 7 at US$199 and lower the price for the existing models
  • Sell the new generation Nexus 7 at US$149 and discontinue the existing models

DigiTimes first reported in March that the upcoming Nexus 7 will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processor due to the superior communication chip process. The tablet is also claimed to come with 4G LTE capability, a feature that the Apple iPad mini currently has.

When we reviewed the Nexus 7, we found its battery performance to be one of the best in the market. As it is running on a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, we are expecting the next generation Nexus 7 to boast even longer battery mileage since Google chose Qualcomm for its better power efficiency.
