Research Suggests Convergence Of Notebooks And Tablets
According to Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi, tablets might not be cannibalizing on notebook sales as everyone initially thought. Instead, what could be happening is that there is a convergence of the of the 2 categories of portable machines coming into play. The demand for ultra-portable devices has seen the birth of MacBook Air, as well as Intel's new breed of ultra-portables like the Asus UX21 UltraBook. Add to those products, touch sensitive screens, and what you get is essentially the Asus Transformer. With falling prices and more powerful capabilities, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume that convergence is indeed the case.
“The iPad is getting more powerful while the MacBook Air is getting lighter, and the distinction between the two is blurring,” Sacconaghi argues. “In fact, we expect the distinction to blur across notebooks as a whole … In the next two to three years, we believe OEMs will offer notebooks at the weight of the original iPad with touchscreen and integrated keypad capability for under $1,000.”
