Razer's Ornata keyboard combines mechanical switches with membrane rubber domes

Razer's new Ornata keyboard claims to "combine the most desirable traits of membrane rubber dome design with the merits of mechanical keyboard technology." According to Razer, that means you get "the comfort of a membrane keyboard with the tactile feedback of mechanical switches."

Razer has dubbed this new technology "mecha-membrane". From the looks of this animated gif they posted, it looks to be a mechanical switch sitting on top of a rubber dome.

As with most of Razer's recent peripherals, the Ornata has RGB lighting and runs on Razer's Synapse drivers, although an alternate version with monochrome green backlighting will also be available. Both versions also have a detachable magnetic ergonomic wrist rest.

“The Razer Mecha-Membrane is the result of years of research and development that we’ve dedicated to build the best keyboards for gamers,” said Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan. “When we moved to our own Razer Mechanical Switches in our production lines, we were excited to learn from real-use scenarios and apply that knowledge to perfect other technologies. The Razer Ornata is a great example of how our engineers can use feedback to innovate something truly amazing for gamers — in this case, a solution that melds two seemingly disparate keyboard technologies for a phenomenal experience.”

The Ornata is available for pre-order now (shipping on 23rd September) for S$159.90.
