Qualcomm has just unveiled its new 205 Mobile Platform (processor), a low-end SoC with dual 1.1GHz CPUs, 480p maximum display support and 3-megapixel front and rear cameras. What makes the chip interesting is that it also boasts a Cat 4 LTE modem that will be able to bring high-speed 4G connectivity to low-end feature phones. The modem supports 150/50Mbps download/upload speeds, and is compatible with Voice over LTE and Voice over WiFi services, which are currently unheard of in 'dumb phones' commonly seen at the price point Qualcomm is targeting.
"The Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform allows us to bring 4G connectivity and services to the masses with devices at price points never seen before," says Qualcomm VP Kedar Kondap.
The chips are being produced now, and devices using them should start arriving later this year.
