Qualcomm reveals more about the faster, better Snapdragon 821

The Snapdragon 821 system-on-chip for smartphones has been in the works for some time now. Qualcomm finally announced that the new flagship processor is ready to hit the market, with the first batch of Snapdragon 821 phones arriving “this year’s holiday season”.

The Snapdragon 821 builds upon the merits of the current flagship, the Snapdragon 820. Unlike the upgrade from Snapdragon 810 to Snapdragon 820, the difference between the current 820 to the 821 is not as drastic, but it’s still worth noting what Qualcomm did to warrant the update. The differences are listed below:

New features in Snapdragon 821:

  • Snapdragon VR SDK: Virtual Reality toolset for VR developers. This toolset is compatible with the Google Daydream platform.
  • Dual PD: Faster image autofocus speeds, as compared to single phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) solutions.
  • Extended Laser Auto-Focus Ranging: Extends the visible focusing range, improving laser focal accuracy over the Snapdragon 820.
  • Android Nougat OS support: Snapdragon 821 (and 820) supports Android 7.0 (also known as Android N).

Enhanced user experience:

  • 10% shorter boot times
  • 10% faster app launch times
  • Smoother user interaction, including smoother scrolling and more responsive browsing

Improved performance and power consumption:

  • CPU speed increase, potentially up to 10% improvement over Snapdragon 820
  • GPU speed increase, up to 5% more compared to the Snapdragon 820
  • Power savings of up to 5% more when comparing against standard-use case models

ASUS ZenFone 3 Deluxe.

The first smartphone to tout the Snapdragon 821 SoC will be the upcoming ASUS ZenFone 3 Deluxe.
