The company is one of the bright sparks in the semiconductor industry that has been through a tumultuous year so far, with 59% of the leading 127 leading semiconductors suppliers expecting to suffer revenue declines this year. Out of the top 20 listed suppliers compiled by IHS iSuppli, seven of them experienced double-digit revenue declines (in terms of percentage) and they include companies like Texas Instruments, Toshiba, Renesas Electronics Corporation, STMicroelectronics, AMD, Freescale Semiconductor and Elipida Memory. It appears that AMD has suffered the largest decline in revenue of almost 18% and has been relegated to twelfth position.

Besides Qualcomm who has posted strong gains in its revenue, there is another company that has reason to celebrate; Sony attained a 20.1% gain in revenue due to the growth of the company's CMOS image sensor business, which accounts for nearly 60% of its semiconductor takings. Qualcomm's astounding success is attributed to the strong sales of mobile devices that include mainly smartphones and tablets. Looking forward, the outlook of semiconductor industry remains weak as the year draws to a close, with only Asia Pacific companies expecting anemic growth rate of 2.5% while the rest of the companies, which are located in other three regions, are expected to see their collective revenues fall between 2.7% and 5.8% in 2012.
