Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon 802 Processor for TVs and 602A Processor for In-car Entertainment

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 802, a TV-centric SoC with a quad-core Krait 1.8GHz CPU and Adreno 330 GPU. Like the Snapdragon 805 mobile SoC, the 802 is all about 4K ultra HD, though this time it’s for your TVs, set-top boxes, and smart digital media adapters.

Besides decoding of 4K UHD video and enabling console-quality gaming, the 802 processor allows several advanced, concurrent use cases, such as playing an online game while video conferencing, browsing the web while streaming a movie, simultaneously playing back up to four HD videos, or wireless sharing with other connected mobile devices - perfect for today’s multi-talented smart TVs. There’s also advanced content protection by way of Snapdragon’s StudioAccess technology, AllJoyn software connectivity framework support, 2-stream, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, a Hollywood Quality Video (HQV) processing engine that up-converts 1080p content to near–4K quality, and a Hexagon DSP for Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound decoding.

Snapdragon 602A

Then there’s the Snapdragon 602A, a chip designed for in-car entertainment. It shares many similarities with the existing Snapdragon 600 that’s used in mobile devices, such as quad-core Krait CPU, Adreno 320 GPU, and Hexagon DSP, but is further tweaked to ‘meet stringent automotive industry standards for temperature, quality, longevity and reliability’. The 602A is pre-integrated with Qualcomm’s Gobi 9x15 multimode 3G/4G-LTE and supports 2-stream, dual-band 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0 LE wireless technologies. Qualcomm clearly thinks that the 602A will help realize next-gen automotive entertainment systems with advanced features like multiple OSes, enhanced 3D navigation, facial and gesture recognition, and rear seat 3D gaming - just to name a few. Part of the Snapdragon Automotive Solutions, it also supports Android and QNX operating systems, thus giving carmakers greater flexibility when they design and build their connected infotainment systems.
