Another day, another mobile processor/s announced. Yesterday's NVIDIA press conference shed some light on what to expect in the mobile landscape in the following months; riding on the momentum gained in 2012, Qualcomm has followed up with the introduction of two speedy processors made specifically for high-end devices, the Snapdragon 800 and 600.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors will indeed show support for what you would expect in a next-gen mobile device. It is said to deliver up to 75 percent better performance than the Snapdragon S4 processors with double the graphics compute performance from new Krait 400 CPU cores (at up to 2.3GHz each) and an Adreno 330 GPU. Not only that, it will come with support for up to 2560 x 2048 pixel display resolution, capture/playback/display in UltraHD video (with four times 1080p pixel density), faster LTE Cat 4 modem, faster 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and components tuned for lower power consumption. Tablets will not be the only one harnessing the full power of this processor as well; phones will leverage on these for ultra performance - Qualcomm has mentioned that mobile phones will be running at the full 2.3GHz frequency. We should expect to see these processors available in commercial devices by mid-year 2013.

On the Snapdragon 600 end of the spectrum, the quad-core Krait processor and Adreno 320 graphics have gotten a power boost, with a promised 40 percent increase. Snapdragon 600 devices should arrive slightly earlier, by second quarter of 2013.

With many of today's high-end smartphones powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processors, including the recently announced Sony Xperia Z, ASUS PadFone 2, and LG Nexus 4, there's no doubt its successors will pick up its pace as well. We are not too far from right anyway - with Qualcomm saying that it's already got 50 different products lined up to use the powerful new chips, it seems the they are up to a good start in 2013. Expect to see really powerful phones soon, they might perhaps be in time for show at next month's MWC.
