Taiwanese networked solutions provider QNAP has announced that its network-attached storage (NAS) devices will now officially support Kodi Entertainment Center. Kodi is a free and open-source software media player and entertainment hub that will provide owners of QNAP NAS devices with more powerful and intuitive ways to access and play their digital media files from anywhere with an internet connection.

Formerly known as XBMC prior to version 14, Kodi 14.2 Helix was just announced last month as the final point release before Kodi 15, codenamed “Isengard”. If users have XBMC v13 installed, they can still install Kodi separately to take advantage of its support for newer H.265 (HEVC) and VP9 video codecs, performance improvements and streamlined interface.

XBMC v13 is also being renamed to HD Player in QNAP’s HD Station platform, a free app available in QNAP’s Linux-based QTS operating system, and will feature a newer, more intuitive user interface, QTS Media Library integration, and user authentication for securing NAS data. Both Kodi and HD player can be installed together on the same NAS device via HD Station.

Many users now use NAS devices to store large media libraries, and QNAP’s support for Kodi is likely to be appreciated by users looking for more options and better ways to access their multimedia files.

QNAP’s x51, x53, x70, x71, x79 and x80 series NAS will bring support for Kodi. The supported devices span QNAP’s entire range of NAS devices, putting Kodi within reach of a diverse user base including home users, small-and-medium businesses, and enterprise applications. By installing HD Station and connecting the QNAP NAS to an HDMI-equipped display, users can enjoy their video, music and photo collections stored on their QNAP NAS, surf the web, and even control the entire experience from their mobile devices with dedicated apps for iOS and Android.
