Project Bold: Independent Musician Spends a Weekend Redesigning BlackBerry Better Than BlackBerry
Independent Musician Spends a Weekend Redesigning BlackBerry Better Than BlackBerry
Call it an interesting thought experiment. Independent musician Dylan Seeger, a BlackBerry fan, spent a weekend rethinking BlackBerry - and came up with a better BlackBerry than BlackBerry.
Central to Seeger's re-imagining is to scrap BlackBerry 10, and replace it with a new OS called Bold. Seeger also argues for the new BlackBerry phones to come with a physical keyboard - and actually finds a way to make it work.
Because the physical keyboard is always present, you can just start typing to search the entire phone, with no need to touch the screen. With predictive text, you can also type in calendar events just by keying in text. It's like having an OS with Fantastical's natural language engine, Google's predictive search and the power of an app launcher like LaunchBar all in one phone, as its front-facing UI. It's smart, exciting, and yes - bold.
While armchair redesigning is easier posted than done, you can't deny that Seeger has some pretty interesting ideas. It's also not the first time someone from outside a company has created a radical new redesign which looks better than the official version.
In 2012, a design student named Andrew Kim released a bold, modern take on Microsoft's branding, which landed him a job in Microsoft's Xbox division. Recently Joseph Machalani, a 20-year old UI designer created a redesign of Windows 8 which looks like it'd actually work better than Microsoft's Windows 8.
