Privacy-Centric Blackphone Launches at MWC 2014, Available for Pre-Order

 The Blackphone runs runs on PrivatOS which is based on the Android 4.2.2 platform.

First unveiled on January 16, the Blackphone is now available for pre-order at Mobile World Congress 2014. It will ship to customers in June.

Consumers and enterprises can pre-order the unlocked Blackphone at US$629 (excluding shipping costs). It will also be available through selected partner carriers from launch including KPN Mobile, the inaugural launch carrier for Blackphone serving European regions such as Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. The cost of the Blackphone includes:

  • Two years of subscription to Silent Circle, an encrypted communication service platform for mobile devices (worth US$240)
  • Three one-year subscriptions for "Friends and Family" (worth US$360)
  • Two years of subscription to Disconnect, a service that enables you to visualize and block the invisible websites that track you (US4120)
  • Two years of subscription to SpiderOak, a private online backup, syncing and sharing platform (US$120)
  • An international power adapter kit (US$39)

The build quality is quite good.

The Blackphone is powered by a quad-core 2GHz processor and 2GB RAM. It sports a 4.7-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels, Bluetooth 4.0, an 8-megapixel rear camera and 16GB internal storage. It also supports 4G LTE connectivity.
