PowerColor joins the fray with PowerColor Radeon R9 Fury

PowerColor has announced its own version of the air-cooled Radeon R9 Fury, joining the Sapphire’s own card equipped with a custom Tri-X cooler.

The PowerColor R9 Fury relies on a triple-fan cooler to keep temperatures on the Fiji GPU down, so we expect that it will be around 300mm in length. That’s actually a fairly long card, in line with many of the custom triple-fan GeForce GTX 980 Tis we’ve come across.

And like the Sapphire card, the cooler actually extends beyond the PCB by a fair bit. The PCB itself is just 198mm long, so there’s around 100mm of overhang on the part of the cooling apparatus. This will probably help improve airflow around the PCB, especially toward the rear of the card.

In case you’re wondering, the PCB has High Bandwidth Memory to thank for its compact size. Compared to GDDR5, the stacked architecture of HBM can enable significant space-savings on the PCB.

The card runs at reference speeds of a 1000MHz core clock and effective memory clock. As on the Sapphire card, the memory clock speeds are lower than what we’re used to because of the use of HBM, which is capable of supporting a super-wide 4096-bit memory bus.

There’s also a dual BIOS switch to cater to overclockers and tinkerers. There’s less risk of bricking the card, and you know you’ll always have a safe setting to fall back on.

Like the liquid-cooled Fury X, the PowerColor R9 Fury lacks a DVI port and has just three DisplayPort outputs and one HDMI port for display connectors. The card is powered by two 8-pin PCIe connectors, and PowerColor recommends that you have at least a 750 watt power supply in your system.

We don’t yet have details on pricing and availability, but we’ll update when we know more.
