Population Data Now on OneMap

You won't be able to tell from this screenshot, but according to the Population Query, in 2010, Bedok has the most number of people (22,561) having at least S$8,000 of income from work.

For those unaware, Singapore Land Authority’s OneMap is an integrated online geospatial platform that provides reliable and accurate location-based information and services from government agencies to the public. For example, it has maps like street maps and land lot, an electoral division view, and even various views from URA's plans. But what makes OneMap really tick is the free map-based services that it provides. You can check things like live traffic information, obtain the latest property transaction prices, find schools near properties, search for registered businesses, and even report community cats. There's also something called 'themes', which are based on location data provided by partner agencies. For example, you can see where all the community clubs, heritage sites, child care services, sport centers, and dengue clusters are located around the island.

The latest service to OneMap is the Population Query. This is a collaboration between the Department of Statistics and the SLA that enables users to visualize demographic data on a map. The raw data in a spreadsheet format can be found on the Department of Statistics' website, but as you can imagine, interpreting these numbers can be very difficult. The interactive Population Query on OneMap solves that problem, and then some. Because themes can be combined with your Population Query searches, you can now do things like find out how many people living in Woodlands are under the age of four, and how many childcare services are already available there. So if you're a childcare service provider looking to expand, it gives you an insight whether it makes sense to open a new schoolhouse in the area.

So go give OneMap a try - you'll be surprised by the amount of information available.
