Popular Torrent Website Demonoid Shut Down by Police

The popular torrent website, Demonoid, has been shut down by Ukranian police. The website was taken offline last week and it was revealed that it was a result of a massive DDos (distributed denial-of-service) attack. However, that wasn't the end of the bad news faced by Demonoid users. Apparently, after it came back to life, a coordinated effort led by the local authorities has brought the site down again, and possibly for good.

Reportedly, government officials arrived in ColoCall, the largest datacenter in Ukraine and Demonoid's present home, last week and proceeded to seal the servers after copying information off them. And while Demonoid had blocked all Ukrainian IP addresses so as to not provoke the ire of the Ukrainian government, it seems that wasn't enough to prevent the crosshairs on setting on the popular torrent tracker.

The main motivation behind this action has been shown to be politics; a source inside the Interior Ministry of Ukraine has revealed that the attack on Demonoid was the government's effort to show the United States that it was serious in enforcing copyright. And there was no better timing to take the site down than when the Deputy Minister Valery Khoroshkovsky was visiting the United States.
