Petfie, a photo-sharing app for animal lovers, launches in Singapore

The Petfie app has officially launched in Singapore. The photo-sharing app, which has some unique mechanics, claims to be the first of its kind and was specially developed for pet owners and animal lovers and activists.

Unlike most photo-sharing apps, Petfie uses an "animal-centric approach" where users follow animal profiles instead of human user profiles. These profiles can further be categorized other pet profiles or community animal profiles. The latter profile, which is managed by the community, can be used for social causes.

For example, the Cat Welfare Society of Singapore (CWS) has decided to use the app for its Stray Cat Sterilization Program (SCSP). By using the app, volunteers or even members of public, can spot and earmark community cats that require sterilization. It is hoped then that the community will step in and help the CWS and the cats by taking these marked animals in for sterilization so as to keep their numbers manageable.

On the left, we can see that there is a community cat that has been marked for sterilization. On the right, we can see that there is a cat available for adoption.

Petfie was conceived by Jerome Chan and he hopes that Petfie will become a platform that will bring together pet owners, animal lovers and related businesses and organizations such as the CWS.

He said, "I hope that by building a tight nestled community of pet owners and animal lovers, individuals, organizations and businesses, they can share photos and tips of their favorite animals, to seek community support and to advocate animal welfare."

A web version as well as an app for Android will be available later this year. For more information on how you can volunteer with the CWS' Stray Cat Sterilization Program, visit the CWS webpage.

Petfie is available for download on the App Store.
