Support for Next-Generation Form Factor (NGFF) M.2 drives is increasingly common on motherboards today. With drives like the Crucial MX200, M500 and Samsung 850 EVO available in M.2 form factor, consumers who prefer to ditch traditional 2.5-inch SSDs have a growing number of drives to choose from.

Patriot has now added to the list with the announcement of its Ignite series M.2 SSDs. The new drives are Type 2280 drives, measuring 22mm wide by 80mm long, and should be compatible with the majority of motherboards and notebooks out there with M.2 support.

The Ignite series M.2 SSDs are rated for sequential read and write speeds of up to 560MB/s and 320 MB/s respectively. They also use multi-level cell (MLC) NAND and the Phison S10 controller, which debuted on last year’s Corsair Neutron XT 2.5-inch SSDs. Patriot already produces the Ignite series SSDs in a 2.5-inch form factor (which incidentally has a supposed sequential write speed of up to 545MB/s for the 480GB model), so the latest M.2 drives would appear to be a way to diversify its product line-up. The flash drive manufacturer also offers mSATA drives with its Pyro M3 SSDs.

The new M.2 drives are still based on the SATA 6Gbps interface and will support Windows 7, 8, 8.1, Vista and Linux. As expected of any modern drive, the M.2 Ignite SSDs will support wear levelling and garbage collection, in addition to features like end-to-end data protection, smartECC and Smart Refresh.

Patriot appears to be positioning the M.2 Ignite SSDs as an affordable option for consumers looking to upgrade their laptops or small form factor PCs, as opposed to a drive aimed at shattering benchmarks. Compact ultrabooks could also benefit from the faster startup times and instant access to data and installed programs provided by the diminutive drive.

The Patriot Ignite M.2 SSDs will be available in the following capacities and price points:-

  • 240GB (US$109.99)
  • 480GB (US$209.99)

This would appear to give it a price advantage over similar drives like the Samsung 850 EVO M.2, which is available at US$130 for the 250GB version and US$230 for 500GB. The new drives ship with a three-year warranty and will be available at the beginning of May at online retailers like Amazon and Newegg and select brick-and-mortar stores in the US.
