Panasonic's Ultra HD Premium and THX-certified DX900 4K TV is coming to Singapore

First seen at CES earlier this year, it has come to my attention that the Panasonic DX900 series will available in Singapore from end August.

Specifically, the model that we’ll be seeing in stores soon is the S$6,999 TH-65DX900S, an Ultra HD Premium-certified 65-inch 4K LED-LCD TV. (Update: I'm told that the 58-inch DX900 isn't coming.) For those unaware, this means the DX900 has passed the stringent criteria set out by the UHD Alliance (which Panasonic is a member of) to be qualified as a premium 4K TV. Similar to the top-end LCD models from Samsung and LG, the DX900 is capable of hitting a peak brightness of at least 1,000 nits and a black level of 0.05 nits black level for a premium HDR performance. And while the DX900 isn’t the only Ultra HD Premium set you can buy, it’s the only UHD Premium 4K TV that’s also THX 4K-certified.

To deliver even better performance, Panasonic has chosen to equip the DX900 with a full-array, ‘honeycomb structure’ local dimming system with hundreds of individually controlled local dimming zones. In theory, this should result in better backlight control than most LED edge-lit TVs (e.g., I expect to see fewer blooming artifacts). Panasonic also claims that the DX900 is capable of higher peak brightness across a wider portion of the screen than conventional LCD TVs, which if true, means a heightened HDR experience.

Additionally, the Firefox OS-running DX900 also comes with Panasonic’s HCX+ (Hollywood Cinema experience) chipset, which is an major upgrade over the previous 4K Studio Master Processor. It has an upgraded 3D lookup table that incorporates 8,000 registry points and a new algorithm for color compensation.

Regarding content support, the DX900 supports Netflix 4K, including Netflix HDR streams. Streaming services from Amazon and YouTube are also supported. Additionally, the DX900 supports Control4’s Simple Device Discovery Protocol (SDDP). SDDP enables the DX900 to be quickly and seamlessly integrated into a customer’s connected home using Control4 automation. Of course, sound is important too. In this department, the DX900 packs a large-size speaker box with quad passive radiators and powerful Neodynium magnets.

Update, July 25: Added info that the 58-inch DX900 isn't coming to Singapore.
