Panasonic’s new Lumix GX85 packs big features into a small body

Panasonic’s latest Lumix GX85 packs a new 16.0-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor (without Low Pass filter) that combines with a new Venus Engine imaging processor to produce crisp images with high contrast and excellent colors. Because new sensor also provides incredibly fast signal readout and processing capabilities, the camera is able to capture smooth, high-resolution 4K video in 3840x2160 at 30p(60Hz) / 25p(50Hz) or 24p in addition to the full-HD 1,920 x 1,080 60p (60 Hz) / 50p (50 Hz) videos with full-time AF.

It also uses Panasonic’s 4K Photo technology to allow you to get a shot at just the right moment by letting you extract a single frame from a 4K burst file, and the same three modes (4K Burst, 4K Burst (Start/Stop) and 4K Pre-burst) from before are available so you can best match the situation.

The GX85's Digital Live MOS sensor will be without low pass filter for optimal resolution.

Post Focus is another new function with the Lumix GX85 that lets you select the in-focus area after capture. The camera will takes multiple shots with different focus points from a single shutter release, so all you have to do is take a shot and then touch the point you want in focus on play back.

A new electromagnetic drive in the shutter unit reduces the shutter noise and “slap”, and the camera again utilizes Panasonic’s DFD (Depth from Defocus ) technology to achieve an auto-focusing speed of approximately 0.07 seconds. Various AF functions like Face/Eye Detection AF, Pinpoint AF, One-shot AF and advanced Low Light AF are available for you to choose from so you can best match the shooting conditions in front of you.

In particular, the Low Light AF allows you to focus in low-lit situations down to -4EV, even without the AF assist lamp. There’s also Starlight AF, which allows you to shoot stars in the sky with auto focus, as the camera is able to produce accurate AF calculations based on contrast values in a smaller AF zone.

Dual IS for even better compensation.

Also new with the Lumix GX85, is a 5-axis Dual I.S (Image Stabilizer) system. This combines in-lens O.I.S .(Optical Image Stabilizer, 2-axis) and B.I.S (Body Image Stabilizer, 3-axis), allowing the camera to compensate on a larger range of movement than ever before.

The Lumix GX85 also comes with a 2764-k dot high resolution LVF (Live View Finder) with approximately 100% color reproduction. A 16:9 Wide Screen LVF, the EVF boasts 1.39x/ 0.7x (35mm camera equiv.) magnification and 100% field of view. The 3.0” rear monitor is also impressively high-resolution, with approximately 1040K dots. This is a static-type touch monitor that tilts up by 80-degrees and down by 45-degrees so you have greater flexibility with using the camera above you or below.

The rear LCD does tilt and touch, so you can easily adjust settings or take captures.

Finally, there’s a new L.Monochrome mode in Photo Styles. This allows you to get beautiful monochrome pictures with rich gradations like what was possible with Black and White film stocks before.

Pricing and availability information have yet to be released, but the camera is currently available for pre-order from the US Panasonic site for US$799.99.
