Panasonic Announces Ultra Compact Lumix GM1 Mirrorless System Camera

Panasonic has announced a new premium, ultra-compact mirrorless system camera. The Lumix DMC-GM1 boasts an incredibly compact body but is also a powerhouse - it has the same 16MP sensor inside as the Lumix GX7, and as part of Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds line, is compatible with the entire range of MFT lenses.

The GM1 measures 98.5 x 54.9 x 30.4mm, or approximately the same length and height as a poker card lying on its side. With the SD card and battery inside, the GM1 weighs about 204g, and can get 220-230 shots per charge. It comes with a 3" 1,036k -dot touch-screen LCD, full HD 1080/50i/24p video recording with built-in Wi-Fi.

Panasonic says redesigning the shutter unit to use a motor instead of a spring allowed them to reduce its size by 80%. By adopting a magnesium alloy frame, they were able to mount the sensor unit directly to the body, again reducing the number of parts. They were able to build in a flash by developing a new sliding pantograph-type flash which pops up and down vertically. Optimizing the layout of electronic components further helped to save 30% in space.

The GM1 will come with the new ultra-compact 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

The GM1 comes with the new Lumix G Vario 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH Mega OIS lens with a ultra-compact design. An optional hand grip will be available for users who want a better grip. The GM1 will come in black, silver, white and orange, with the local availability and price to be confirmed.

An optional handgrip will be available for the GM1.
