Panasonic Announces New Lumix G6 Mirrorless System Camera & 14-140mm Lens

Panasonic has announced the new Lumix DMC-G6, the successor to the mirrorless system camera (or what Panasonic is calling Digital Single Lens Mirrorless) DMC-G5 which was announced in July of last year. The G6 comes with a 16MP Live MOS sensor with a newly developed Venus Engine. The G6 is fast; it can shoot up to 7 frames per second and is ready to snap its first frame 0.5 seconds after start-up.

Panasonic says that the design of the Live MOS sensor helps to minimize noise generation while resulting in high resolution. The Venus Engine has advanced noise reduction systems which can now remove large blocks of noise and helps produce clear images. A newly adopted Detail Reproduction Filter enhances the limit resolution by a maximum of 3% and contrast by a maximum of 5%. Advanced D-range Control offers wider dynamic range, while the Low Light AF gains higher performance even without an AF assist lamp.

The G6 also features Full-HD 1080/50p video recording in AVCHD Progressive and MP4, with full-time AF and tracking AF available in video recording. 24p video recording is also available at a maximum bit-rate of 24 Mbps in AVCHD format. The camera comes with Wi-Fi connectivity and NFC technology. The new 1,440k-dot OLED LVF (Live View Finder) boasts a high contrast ratio of 10,000:1, while the 3" free-angle monitor adopts In-Cell Touch technology for improved viewing angles.

Panasonic has also announced a new Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH/Power O.I.S. lens for the Micro Four Thirds system. The new lens has a wide and long range of 14-140mm (28-280mm in 35mm equivalent), and compromises of 14 elements in 12 groups, with three aspherical lenses and two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses to reduce size while minimizing distortion and chromatic aberration.

Incorporating an inner focus drive system and stepping motor, the 14-140mm lens can shoot in photos and videos with silent auto-focusing. It can also achieve high-speed AF with cameras like the GH3 and G6 with a sensor drive at 240 frames per second. The 14-140mm is built with a metal mount and uses multi-coated lens elements to minimize ghosting, with seven blades giving the aperture a rounded shape for smooth background blur.

Both the Lumix DMC-G6 and the Lumix G Vario 14-140mm will be on sale starting in June, with the local retail prices to be announced.
