Panasonic Announces New Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II Lens for Micro Four Thirds

Panasonic has announced a new prime lens for the Micro Four Thirds system. The Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH is the successor to the popular 20mm f/1.7 lens, which was recently discontinued

The new 20mm f/1.7 II (approx. 40mm in 35mm equivalence) features a newly designed metallic profile and promises to maintain the same great performance of the original. The new lens is lighter than the previous version, and comprises of seven lenses in five groups, with two aspherical lenses to minimize distortion and chromatic aberations for corner-to-corner clarity.

The lens comes with seven blades which give the aperture a rounded shape in out-of-focus areas, and features a metal mount with multi-coated lens elements which minimize ghosting and flaring. The lens will come in both black and silver.

No news on whether or not the auto-focus speed has been improved, as the original 20mm f/1.7 lens could be a tad slow to auto-focus, especially when shooting video. The classic lens was also known to have banding issues when used with the Olympus Pen E-M5 at high ISO settings.

The 20mm f/1.7 II's price and release date are to be announced.
