Panasonic and Mozilla Team Up to Build Smarter TVs

Since their introduction, smart features have moved away from being considered a premium feature and are now expected to be part and parcel of every TV. For manufacturers, the smart feature suite and its implementation allows them to differentiate their products But at present, the user experience for internet-enabled functionality on televisions lags behind that delivered by other devices, such as laptops and smartphones.

This scenario might be about to change. At CES 2014, Panasonic and Mozilla have announced a partnership that aims go bring the latter's Firefox OS to the next generation of the former's smart TVs. The new version of Firefox OS aims to leverage HTML5 and already prevalent web technologies on PCs and smart devices, to offer consumers more personalized and optimized access to the internet on their TVs.

The compatibility of Panasonic's next generation of smart TVs with HTML5 also bodes well for cloud services, which should be able to be delivered in the form of apps. You can also expect electronic program guides, currently implemented as embedded code, to switch to HTML5 as well allowing developers to create EPG apps for smartphones and tablets. Without mincing words, Panasonic's Viera Connect platform is not the slickest around. But perhaps the partnership with Mozilla can help change that for the future.
