OSVR’s latest ally for VR technology is Acer

Virtual Reality gained yet another supporter in the form of compatible hardware. Acer is now collaborating with the Open Source Virtual Reality (OSVR) movement, and they will “leverage OSVR technology in its upcoming products”.

Acer will be rolling out a series of computers systems that comes with the NVIDIA GTX980 and GTX Titan graphic processors. These computers are designed to be compatible with OSVR-powered technology, which in turn makes it functional with other VR products that are also working on the OSVR platform. Right now, Acer has the Predator 17X gaming laptop and Predator G1 gaming CPU, and they support OSVR, StarVR, and both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

OSVR is an open-source platform based on the Apache 2.0 license. It is designed to allow the different splinters of VR technology to unify as one standard platform, which in turn means cross-compatibility of VR headsets and VR games (in an ideal setting). Besides reducing fragmentation of VR standards, this would also let developers worry less about content hardware and support when creating VR-related applications.

Currently, OSVR has 350 partners and supporters from the likes of Ubisoft, Intel, Razer, Valve (who has SteamVR), and Gearbox Software (makers of first-person shooter game Borderlands 2). Partners come from all corners of the industry, ranging from content producers, audio solution providers, educators, and technology developers at large. The full list can be found here.
