Opera Mini 9 for iOS introduces Video Boost; aims to get rid of video buffering

You’ve probably heard of Opera Turbo, an Opera browser feature that shrinks webpages you visit to a fraction of their original size, so that everything loads faster and eats less data. Of course, on mobile, other than plain surfing, a lot of us spend our time watching videos. To combat stalled videos and to help save data, Opera Software has announced that starting today, Video Boost will be available on its Opera Mini 9 browser for iOS, alongside other new features like extra options for editing Speed Dial website shortcuts, a revamped data-savings gauge, and support for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The first video optimization to be integrated into a web browser, Video Boost leverages on Opera’s Skyfire division's Rocket Optimizer engine to reduce the size of the video data. This brings down buffering time, and prevents you from burning through your data cap so quickly.

To get Video Boost on Opera Mini 9 for iOS is simple: it’s available when users turn on video optimization in Opera Turbo mode. Under the “O” menu in Opera Mini 9, simply tap the data savings summary to change mode. Video Boost also shows how many videos it has optimized. For those new to Opera browsers, there are two compression modes: Mini and Turbo. In short, Mini mode uses extreme compression to crunch data to as little as 10% of its original size, while Turbo uses less data compression for better website compatibility. Naturally, there’s also an uncompressed mode that turns off compression completely. Also, know that encrypted sites will not go through the compression servers.
