Omate launches smartwatch tailored for 4G video calls at MWC 2017

Omate launches its first 4G-enabled smartwatch at MWC 2017. They call it the Omate 4G Video Call (or O4VC), and it facilitates, well, video calls.

The O4VC smartwatch comes with a 1.3-inch colored touchscreen display at 240 x 240 pixels resolution. It also supports multiple 4G LTE networks, as well as 3G (2,100MHz + 900MHz, or 1900MHz + 850MHz) and 2G networks  (850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz). There’s also a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, a microphone, and a loudspeaker on the O4VC. That pretty much sums up its video-calling abilities.

Other features include a weather-proofed case with IP67 rating, Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, and removable straps. All this is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC.

The design and usage of the Omate O4VC are simple since it’s catered for children, elderly folks, and skilled work in remote areas.  As such, the smartwatch also packs GPS, and the combination of that with 4G and Wi-Fi hotspots allow the device to triangulate the wearer’s physical location. For further assistance, the watch also comes with 24/7 emergency services, although Omate did not expand on that point.

The Omate O4VC is currently only available in the U.S. at US$149 (~S$210.03), and it will begin retail come September 2017.
