Office for iOS now integrates with Box; more cloud services to join soon
Microsoft has announced that it’s now offering all CSPP (Cloud Storage Partner Program) partners the chance to integrate with Office for iOS.
Microsoft:
This integration lets users designate these partner cloud services as “places” in Office, just as they can with Microsoft OneDrive and Dropbox. Users can now browse for PowerPoint, Word and Excel files on their favorite cloud service right from within an Office app. They can open, edit or create in these apps with confidence that their files will be updated right in the cloud. Users can also open Office files from their cloud storage app in Office, then save any changes directly back to the cloud. We’ll follow with other mobile platforms later this year.
Two key points why this is great. First, you can access Office documents stored on your cloud storage vendor (OnDrive, Dropbox, Box) directly in the Office apps. Second, unlike the usual way of opening a file using iOS’ document picker, once a ‘place’ is added and a document opened, the document will be kept in sync. I use this a lot for my writing, and it always worked. Box is the latest addition, but Citrix ShareFile, Edmodo, and Egnyte integrations are also coming soon.
On a related note, Microsoft is now offering real-time co-authoring with Office Online documents stored with third-party cloud storage services, such as Box, Citrix ShareFile, Dropbox, and Egnyte. Also, in the coming weeks, users of Outlook.com can attach files from Dropbox, Box, and OneDrive right from their inboxes, either as traditional attachments or as cloud-based links.
