Office 2016 for Mac is now available for Office 365 subscribers

Four months after releasing the preview for public testing and seven updates later, Microsoft has today announced the official availability of Office 2016 for Mac in 139 countries and 16 languages. A major release for the Mac platform since Office for Mac 2011 five years ago (yup, it was that long ago), Office 2016 for Mac, which consists of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote, is a ground-up rewrite. It’s now switched over fully to Apple’s Cocoa APIs, and has assets optimized for Macs with Retina displays.

Unlike previous Mac versions of the Office productivity suite, Office 2016 won’t have as steep a learning curve if you already use Office on a PC for iPad, with their ribbon interface and task panes. And since it’s cloud-connected, you can quickly get to the documents you’ve recently used on other devices or platforms and pick up where you left off.

Here's a quick intro video of Office 2016 for Mac from Microsoft:

Starting today, you can get Office 2016 for Mac if you’ve an Office 365 subscription. It can be Office 365 Home, Personal, Business, Business Premium, E3 or ProPlus. Simply sign in at office.com/myaccount and follow the instructions. If you’re a student, you may be able to get the suite for free or at a substantial discount. To find out, go to office.com/student.

Of course, you can also go to office.com/mac to buy a subscription. For most consumers, Office 365 Home makes the most sense. At S$13.80 per month, you can install full versions of the Office apps (regardless of platform) on up to five PCs or Macs, as well as on five tablets and phones. And each of the five users gets 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage and 60 minutes' worth of Skype calls per month. The other big advantage of getting Office through Office 365 is that you'll always get the latest versions of the apps. Microsoft says it plans to release updates and new features for Office 365 customers at least once per quarter.

Lastly, Office 2016 for Mac will also be available as a one-time purchase option this September. And if you’re using the preview, you can get the update over the Microsoft AutoUpdate Tool.
