NVIDIA’s updated Quadro M6000 sets a new record with 24GB of VRAM

We may be waiting with bated breath for NVIDIA’s next-generation Pascal GPU architecture to drop, but the company hasn’t been quiet on the professional graphics front. It has announced a new version of its Quadro M6000 card that was released back in 2015, adding a whopping 24GB of video memory to the already high-end card.

The original Quadro M6000 featured 12GB of VRAM, which was a large amount of memory to be sure, but still not the maximum amount that the GM200-based Maxwell card could support. The new card will now be equipped with higher density 8Gb GDDR5 memory chips to double the memory capacity.

In a blog post announcing the upgrade, NVIDIA cited the growing complexity of the work of automotive designers, visual effects artists, and geoscientists. The higher memory capacity should give designers and other graphics professionals the ability to handle more data in real-time and process detailed models smoothly and more quickly. Areas which should see improvements include the development of VR content, the creation of photorealistic images, and scientific research.

In addition, NVIDIA said that the memory boost would allow designers to take advantage of interactive global illumination for their production environments. This could have benefits like allowing automotive engineers to spot design flaws such as errant light reflections from mirrors in their models. This would enable them to identify and address potential problems much earlier.

NVIDIA is also introducing new temperature and clock speed management options, likely in the form of more fine-grained options to control the performance of large arrays of cards.

The upgrade actually gives NVIDIA the bragging rights to having the world’s highest-capacity professional graphics card, surpassing even the 16GB AMD FirePro W9100 (which actually supports up to 32GB of VRAM).

The new 24GB Quadro M6000 will launch next week and replace the previous M6000 in NVIDIA’s line-up. Its price remains unchanged at a cool US$5,000.
